Oryana Natural Foods Market: Traverse City, MI   Write a Review

[Co-ops & Grocery Stores] Updated: 2012-08-23
Oryana Natural Foods market is Northern Michigan’s oldest and most trusted source for organic and healthy foods. From the freshest produce to home-baked scones; all-natural soaps to bulk organic cherries, Oryana is the only place you’ll need to shop for your family’s needs. Oryana began as a food-buying club back in 1973. Since then, it has grown into a $8.8 million, 6,500 square foot full service co-op that serves northern Michigan and beyond. More than thirty years later, Oryana is now the largest source of organic products in northern Michigan. When customers walk in the door, (and remember, you don’t have to be a member to shop at Oryana, everyone is welcome), you can be assured of Oryana’s commitment to quality. Our mission is to provide high quality food produced in ecologically sound ways at fair value to members and the community. Oryana was the first food co-op in the country to be designated a Certified Organic Retailer, which means: all organic products are in compliance with the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) final rule on organics, implementing protocols to insure no commingling with nonorganic product, and that our employees are properly trained in the handling of organic product. By taking these extra steps, Oryana ensures that the chain of organic integrity is preserved. Our deli uses healthy, high-quality ingredients to create a unique selection of sandwiches, organic salads, entrees and baked goods–easy to grab and go. Try one of our specialties, like the tuna pesto sandwich on fresh Stone House Bread. We also offer organic and fair traded coffee and tea and the best scones in town. We have a full selection of vitamins, homeopathic products and natural remedies. Our experienced staff can help you find holistic therapies from immune strengthening herb teas to healing aromatherapy products. Our natural skin care, bath products and cosmetics will treat your body and spirit to a clean, beautiful transformation. You’ll find Dr. Hauschka’s Skin Care line as well as a variety of exclusive therapeutic treatments. Having special diet and health needs doesn’t mean having to sacrifice flavor. We also offer a large selection of easy-to-identify products including: wheat-free, gluten-free, low-sodium, Kosher, lactose-free, dairy-free and vegan. Although you don’t need to be a member to shop at Oryana, by joining you’ll have a vote in the co-op’s operation and direction, as well as enjoy special sales and discounts. Our enthusiastic staff would love to answer any questions you have about food, nutrition and wellness.

The Syracuse Real Food Co-op is small, but mighty. Our locally grown, full-line natural foods market boasts a destination organic produce department, large organic bulk foods section, and vegetarian deli. We find that many of our regular customers travel 50 miles or more to visit our bustling store. Conveniently located off Westcott Street, in the outer neighborhood of Syracuse University and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, the co-op is a beehive of activity. Although cooperatively owned by 2,200+ member owners, you need not be a member to shop at the co-op. However, once you visit our vibrant, yet cozy store, chances are you’ll want to become a member owner too. Amidst the array of colorful delights you will find local dairy products and eggs, meats that were raised organically on local family farms, wild-caught seafood, fresh-baked breads, wellness and natural body care products, and much more. Distinguishing itself from other markets with its exceptional customer service, the co-op has been a source of sustenance and refuge to generations of Syracuse residents and visitors. Nestled in the historic University neighborhood, the co-op has been in continuous operation since 1972. Thirty years later, the co-op is a valued and active part of the Syracuse community, as well as one of the best food stores in town. Co-op customers are as diverse as the beans in our bulk aisle, but they all have one thing in common: a love of good, real food. Returning time and again–maybe because of an interest in wellness, organics, food safety, regional food, gourmet cuisine, or cooperative economics–customers are made to feel welcome by our friendly, knowledgeable staff.

Located on Little Traverse Bay in the northern part of lower Michigan, Petoskey has been home to the Grain Train Natural Foods market for over 35 years. The Grain Train began in 1971 as a buying club, and then moved to tiny retail quarters on the second floor of a local bookstore. Another move and 25 years in a small historic building in the downtown area, the co-op and membership grew. After years of fund-raising and active member participation in developing a building fund and a plan, the Grain Train built and moved to its current 4,500 square-foot storefront on the western edge of downtown in 2002.
